a bench by the sea

I came alone

to a bench by the sea

I didn’t think I’d find you

here, in the softly falling rain

I didn’t think I’d find you at all

Your voice is familiar and far away

as we spoke about years we let pass

what we might have done with them

if there was still world where we exist

But the hours we spent there

at the end of all things

were only ever seconds

And the world goes on

even as ours ends

In the softly falling rain

on a bench by the sea

I glanced back when I left you there

just for one last look

But all I could see

through rain falling soft

was an empty bench and her sea
